On a business trip to the area and chose Hoppin’ Johnz because of the reviews and we typically go for this type of menu. The food was delicious from the beginning. BBQ Shrimp appetizer had a very yummy smoky flavor and the goat cheese mixed greens salad was literally one of my favorite restaurant salads to date! The gumbo was also delicious… easily top 5 outside of NOLA; and we go annually! Our waitress was awesome as well. Very friendly, checked on us frequently and actually made the salad recommendation for me.

Definitely becoming one of my favorite places to eat in Elizabeth City. Their special list frequently rotates with some really unique dishes. I most recently had the blackened mahi over coconut rice with cucumber ribbons and it was exceptional. I've also had some of their staples on the menu and never been let down. It feels like a lot of care goes into each plate. I hope they keep that level of consideration up. The waitresses are always very nice and friendly. And sitting outside on a nice day is a bonus

On your way to or from highway 17 best bang for your buck money could buy A+ all the way around Southern charm hospitality, and charisma. Above and beyond the staff have gone to create such a welcome. The smell of the food gets you going and when you bite into it it makes you realize something good is on the way and when you bite on to it, you discover that it is beyond what you would imagine and is on a different level.

This was our first time exploring Elizabeth City and we needed a family friendly restaurant for a late lunch. I’m so thrilled that we stumbled into this gem of a restaurant. Although a little on the pricey side, the food was absolutely delicious and the service good. We ordered the chicken and waffles, beet salad with shrimp, sweet potato fries, and a jerk chicken salad. All was absolutely hot, fresh, and delicious. Not a morsel was left on anyone’s plate. I would definitely come back! Highly recommend.

Visited a 2nd. time just in case the first time was a fluke. Nope, this place is legitimately great. The menu choices are not only varied and unique, but every item (so far) has been absolutely delicious! We had one of the specials this time, which was a cornbread stuffing waffle covered with turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy & a side cranberry sauce. Soooo very good. Great service and a cool, darkish atmosphere seals the deal. We will be back again...and again.

I’ve been coming to HJ for years for many reasons. The main being consistency. I know every time I go, the food is gonna be good, the employees are going to be friendly and the locals will be welcoming. I personally think they have the best salad in a 30 mile radius! You must try the mixed greens salad (extra dressing), baked bronze chicken breast, pork chop or one of their burgers! Best lunch spot in town!

We visited from the Chicago area and came here after seeing it mentioned in an AirBnB review and it did NOT disappoint!!!! I would absolutely go again! They have new specials daily and their staff gave great recommendations! I'm super picky about where I choose to eat out, as I have been let down so much in recent years that we just avoid spending the money, but this place is awesome! We got carry out, but the atmosphere was cozy, warm and inviting. We had the Smokehouse burger, Shrimp Po'Boy, Chimichuri Shrimp and Pimento Cheese....all made perfectly and was delicious! You won't regret a visit here!

We had steak and hoppin john, the food was every bit as good as I had heard. The sauce on the steak was absolutely delicious. The waitress was wonderful, and helped us in ordering, recommending the cake, which was also really nice.
